Jane Austen fans in Bath celebrate 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen fans have come together in Bath to celebrate the 200th anniversary of her best-loved work Pride and Prejudice.

A 12-hour readathon began at 11am today at The Jane Austen Centre, in Gay Street, with people taking it in turns to read aloud from the famous novel.

The event is being live streamed over the internet and the reading is being broken up by displays of regency drama, dancing and music.

Speaking ahead of the readathon, centre director David Baldock said he hoped it would unite fans from across the world.

    “I have never read this book, but perhaps I should. P D James was on the Today program on Radio Four this morning extolling it's virtues. As a great fan of her writing I must bow down to her expertise.”

    “When I passed the Jane Austen Centre in Gay Street this morning, there was a notice on the door stating that the place was closed for refurbishment.........no sign of any activity or 'readathon' ....”
