American research has shown reading Jane Austen novels is not only a pleasure but could also make people cleverer.

Reading novels such as Pride and Prejudice closely activates the areas of the brain more commonly associated with movement and touch, the researchers say. The findings surprised neuroscientists at Michigan State University who expected to see changes in regions of the brain which regulate attention as the main differences between casual and more focused reading.
