More than 500 people queued to get their hands on Apple’s new iPhone 5 in Bath this morning.

Some gadget fans had been waiting outside the giant’s SouthGate store since 9pm last night to be the first to own the new phone, the price of which starts at £529.

Gary Powell, 26, was one of the early birds and had been queuing since 4am.

He said: “An Apple launch is a real event so it’s great to see people in Bath really embrace it.

“I don’t care that I’ve had to stand out here for so long. I just wanted to be one of the first in the UK to say I have the new iPhone. I can’t wait to get home now so I can play around with it.”

Phone insurance firm www.insurance2go.co.uk had staff working the queue with what it called its iQueued All Night service which included free massages for those with sore backs, hot drinks and pastries.

Insurance2go boss Duncan Spencer said: “It was incredible to see so many people at the SouthGate store eager to get their hands on the latest iPhone.

“Our iQueued All Night service was very popular too, especially the massages. Standing up for that long or sitting down on the cold floor can be rather painful so our masseuse was much in demand.

“The fact that there is still so much excitement for the new iPhone, even though this is now the fifth version, proves that Apple really is still in a league of its own when it comes to smart phones.

“I think there’s added interest here in Bath also because the city is such a hub for technology and digital innovation with many firms building apps for the iPhone – it’s Silicon Somerset.”

“I saw em the other day. Are people's lives so desperately empty that they are willing to queue hours just to be one of the first among their 'friends' to get the latest gadget? Something has gone seriously wrong.”

“Having seen both iphones and samsungs, I opted for a sony ericsson sometime back. The biggest appeal is that it's not a status symbol. Secondly, the contract included its cost. personally, I like the slim design - http://tinyurl.com/cjn6zad

“I don't regurgitate - I make an informed decision based on the information in front of me and based on "playing" with both - the Samsung is a better screen and easier to navigate. Had I thought the iPhone was better I would have no hesitation in saying so - I have a mind of my own and am not at all influenced by my son (that is why I have a Bose stereo!), just proud of his position and what he has achieved since he joined the company. I have no desire to own either of them as I don't need a Smartphone having happily dumped the rat race, jumped off the treadmill, call it what you will. if he worked for Apple I would still not like the iPhone or the ridiculous cult following it has - but I will admit to having an iPod Touch for music in the car!”
