Heidi: A Goat's Tale

egg theatre, Bath

As four rather crazy goats burst onto the stage, it becomes evident that this will be a retelling with a difference. Heidi, an orphaned girl is taken to live with her Grandfather in the mountains when her aunt appears to take her to Frankfurt to befriend Clara and receive an education.

Heidi is unhappy and longs for the country air, she is eventually returned home and when Clara visits the benefits of the mountains becomes all too obvious and the ending is a happy one. Caroline Horton as Heidi is an engaging and convincing young girl, the goats around her narrate the story through eating pages of the original novel and through role playing the various characters in their own way. Their goat language is fun and the production bounces along.

The innovative design of the goat shed from Hayley Grindle is a visual treat, with Seamus H. Carey as a musical rooster up on his perch providing some great accompaniment.

All the company play instruments throughout the show and each provide their own stamp on their retelling whether as film buffs or musical theatre fans.

It is an alternative to the more traditional Christmas tales around, the snow fall allows the production a slightly more festive feel than it might have had and leaves a memorable image for the younger audience members to take home with them.
