Thousands of people working for West Country health trusts could be asked to work extra hours for free, give up holiday entitlement and earn less for night shifts – in exchange for keeping their jobs.

In an eagerly anticipated document the South West Pay, Terms and Conditions Consortium today publishes a business case which outlines how tens of millions of pounds can be saved – but at a cost.

The Western Daily Press can reveal that the report, which is to be handed to 19 health trusts in the region, says unprecedented financial challenges mean that the average health trust must cut £15million from its budget over three years, with an estimated 65 per cent of this coming from payroll costs.

“I don't understand why the NHS and other public bodies can't make better use of volunteers, as is common practise in the Hospice Care sector. This would reduce costs at a stroke.”

“Well OBVIOUSLY the authorities have to heavily regulate the public sector provider to ensure its staff are all overworked, underpaid and utterly demoralised. This will enable them to compete in the new healthcare market with all the deregulated private-sector providers who are completely free to set their own pay and conditions, subsidised by their other commercial operations if necessary.

It wouldn't be a fair competition otherwise, would it?”

“And, no doubt, it goes without saying that the Bosses will not be affected at all. Indeed the poor loves will probably find a way to pay themselves more. Time people to wake up before it is too late and the Tories and their stooges destroy our NHS.”

“It would seem the EU forced Britain to adopt working time directives just so we could flout them.

What could possibly go wrong when you remove fair working conditions, underpay and overwork those with responsibility for the weakest and most vulnerable??”
