Children at a Bath primary school have said goodbye to their long-serving headteacher.

Popular Diana George has left Oldfield Park Junior School at the same time as a colleague who between them have notched up 56 years of service.

A farewell assembly at the school was held for Mrs George and special needs co-ordinator Jane Clouting, who are both retiring.

Mrs George, who has worked at the school for 19 years, said she had fond memories of her time there.

She said: "I will miss the children the most and, of course, my colleagues.

"The last few weeks have been fantastic because the school is always so busy. I have had so many lovely comments and cards for children, parents and friends that I haven't had time to dwell on the fact I am leaving."

Mrs George added that it had been her childhood ambition to become a teacher.

She said: "As a child I always knew I wanted to be a teacher and I used to play schools when I was little. What I love about the job is the joy you get when you see the children move on and succeed."

Mrs George is about to become a grandmother and intends to spend her retirement with the new addition to her family.

Mrs Clouting has retired after working at the school for 37 years.

She said: "I will miss the staff and the children. The children here are just amazing and the parents have also been really supportive.

"Everybody who comes into this school, whether visitors or support staff, they always comment on what an amazing, happy place it is.

"All the staff are very close and we all have a laugh, and that is really down to the head."

Mrs Clouting added that although she was leaving there was a chance she could return at some point.

She said: "I am retiring from teaching, but I am not going to say I will never come back. I think I may have some role on a voluntary basis.

"I thought when Mrs George went, it would be an appropriate time for me to go too."

Chair of governors Marilyn Bakshi-Gleave explained the legacy Mrs George would leave behind.

She said: "She will be remembered over the 19 years for bringing a super Victorian building forward but keeping the traditions.

"She will also be remembered for her support of all children with special needs. Some had been turned away from other schools but she always made sure the door is open here."
