College campuses across Wiltshire created their own hats to compete for the world record title of the most people wearing paper hats at the same time.

At 12:30pm today (Thursday, 31, January 2013) the Trowbridge college students filed into the sports hall with their creative hats for a chance to make it into the Guinness Book of Records and to top Japan's record of 917 people wearing paper hats at the same time.

The hall was filled with students and staff ready to take on the challenge exceeding the number of people originally expected at the campus for the event.

Around 500 people attended each with their own unique paper hat where they had to sit for five minutes with it on for a chance to make history.

Richard Binks, Curriculum Manager for Trowbridge College said: "Originally we were expecting 300 students but as the weeks went on more signed up and we had about 500 students take part which is great."

Ten campuses joined in the world record attempt including Salisbury and Lackham colleges. The event was recorded on video and stewards made sure everyone kept their hat on during the five minute duration.

According to a member of staff, around 1,700 students took part across all campuses beating Japan's record should the Guinness Book of Records believe the record attempt to be successful.

Wiltshire College will find out if they receive world record status in about six weeks once the evidence has been viewed.

The paper hats were then disposed of using blue recycling bins as part of Wiltshire College's campaign to be green.
