He said he had tried to get national award acknowledgement for the couple in the past and added: "Surely if this excellent example of devotion to the community cannot be recognised on a national basis, then let us show our gratitude by doing so on a local basis."

Mr Stent, 78, a former Bath Rugby player, is chairman of the charity's Bath fundraising group.

The pair give regular talks on the cause and have organised countless collections, shows and events, while every year setting up a temporary charity shop to boost funds.

Mrs Stent has also given the profits from two books, and been a volunteer puppy walker since 1982, looking after 43 guide dogs while the animals were being trained.

Her husband joined her as a puppy walker after he retired in 1994.

The nomination was supported by Guide Dogs head of volunteering Judith Taylor, who said: "Norma and Derek Stent have developed the Bath branch into one of the most successful branches in the country.

"Admired by all their fellow members, they dedicate so much time and energy to their work that they inspire and motivate all who have the pleasure of meeting and working alongside them.

"Such is their dedication that Derek is also an official Guide Dogs speaker and never turns down an opportunity to speak on the work of Guide Dogs both at a local and national level."
