More than 30 youngsters defied the cold conditions to show their commitment to setting up a girls’ rugby team in Bath.

They turned out at Lambridge on Saturday for an open training session, which had been organised by Bath Rugby Ladies with a view to establishing age-group sides in the future.

And the event was such a success that a second training day has already been organised for Saturday, March 2, running from 11am-2pm.

“It is very promising that the girls are so enthusiastic and keen to get into rugby,” said organiser Sarah Burgess.

“It was great to see the girls all together in one group as so many of them have never played with other girls, at a rugby club or on a full-sized pitch.

“At the end of the session, the girls played a 15-a-side, 20-minute touch rugby game and it showed us just how much talent there is out there in Bath and the surrounding areas.”

RFU community officer Ian Smith, better known as Smudge, led the session with the help of Avonvale’s Chris Hobbs, Avon’s Matt Sutherland, Bath RFC’s Tony Holton and Patrick Cook, head of the Somerset RFU women and girls forum. A few members of the Bath Rugby Ladies team also joined in the fun.

The club hope to establish under-13, 15 and 18 teams but are currently deciding which will be set up first, based on the interest shown.

They also need more coaching volunteers and team managers to help out, as well as sponsors, and anyone interested is asked to contact Sarah at bathrugbyladies@hotmail.co.uk or 07816 757644 for more information.
