Gay Street ban
I have read with "incredulity" Councillor Roger Symonds' proposal to close traffic using the upper part Gay Street and Circus to go north of the city (Chronicle, February 7.
At the moment it is possible to exit the city by the Gay Street-Circus route in approximately two minutes without stopping and therefore keeping CO2 emissions (pollution) to a minimum, so the alternative is to use the George Street route. I have today used this route and fortunately I was driving one of the new generation of vehicles in which the engine cuts out when the vehicle is idling-waiting in traffic etc.
In this instance the engine cut out seven times waiting to pass parked trades vehicles and traffic lights – a journey time of seven minutes in which co2 emissions were several hundred times greater than the Circus exit.
I would now like to see the council minutes pertaining to this bizarre plan also with reference, if any, to any dialogue with the residents of the Circus – without prejudice, of course.

“Oh, I'll go along with banning traffic in Gay Street is silly. But what on earth can annoy you about the stop start technology? I'd really like to know. Cars move off as smoothy as if engine had't been turned off, journey is much quieter and it saves fuel and emissions. What's not to like? Facts please.”

“@jessiethecat, i don't like that 'stopstart' technology either, its really annoying!
Anway, back to the subject, this idea of banning traffic in Gay Street is silly. It's almost like they want us to believe that all Bath's traffic problems will be resolved. I don't think so. You push traffic from one area, and it just makes it worse in another area.”

“Has the local Tory party got a team of arrowers? Malcolm Cupis makes a comment which is profoudly silly, not to mention being possibly libellous and gets loads of green arrows. Brook Whelan makes a seriously uninformed comment, showing he has totally misunderstood the technology of the new generation of cars and gets green arrows. Captain D posts a comment pointing out Whelan has made a very silly mistake and gets red arrows. Then Brook Whelan says oh yes, look at that, he had made a booboo - but hey, he doesn't like these cars - so that's all right - and gets more green arrows. I don't know who is doing this, but you sure are making the local Tories look like a bunch of petty minded dimwits.”

“Apologies - it seems I was a bit too dismissive of 'stop/start' technology.
My understanding has always been that car engines take 10 to 15 minutes to warm up fully, but after doing some quick research, it would seem that modern car engines warm up in less than 3 minutes.
I'm still not keen on the technology though. I generally avoid driving in town centres anyway so I don't get stuck in traffic that much.
I do agree it is good for fuel consumption though.”

“Brooke Whelan
"You're pretty sure"
What?
So; talented and trained automotive engineers from different vehicle manufacturers across the globe have been seeking ways to reduce emissions and save fuel. Switching the engine off when its not in use is one of the ways they have come up with and this has been checked by experts (car tax reduced accordingly) and proven to be a good thing.
I can only assume you are the god of all automotive knowledge, you are just keeping it to yourself with the exception of an occasional 'pearl' like this one.
Dear oh dear.”

“Thankfully, most (if not all) cars have an 'override' facility for this engine cut out feature.
I'm pretty sure that the numerous times an engine is switched off and then on again several times on each car journey will make emissions worse in the longer run. By longer run, I mean over a 5 or 10-year period.”

“Symonds doesn't care if he creates more congestion, more pollution, longer journey times, greater frustration and general chaos.
So long as he has nice empty streets to pedal his bicycle up and down, everybody else can go hang.”
