Dance Til You’re Dead was the name of the float, and the carnival club involved danced until they almost dropped when their music died, winning them the Spirit of Carnival award at a Somerset town’s weekend parade.

Little Devils carnival club faced a tough procession when their electrically-provided sound disappeared, but they made up for it with an all-singing, all-dancing show which captured the hearts of the crowds and Frome’s town crier, who was judging the Spirit of Carnival award.

Magnum, from Blandford, took the float championship and the tableau top prize with a dramatic interpretation of Robbery at the Old Casino.

Organisers are delighted by another successful event in the Wessex Grand Prix circuit, but are hoping next year to tempt entrants for the adult group masqueraders class and local masqueraders class, neither of which attracted entries this year.

There were plenty of other walking entries. Masqueraders take carnival closest to the public, and often provide some of the wittiest entries.
