People will be able to get daily tips on how to reduce the amount of water they use throughout this month.

Bath-based Wessex Water will be encouraging customers to save water and energy as it publishes the tips on Twitter.

These will include how to wash a car without water, taking shorter showers and turning the tap off when people brush their teeth.

The new initiative September Savers, is continuing the company's campaign Target Twenty, which wants customers to pledge to save 20 litres of water a day by making simple changes to their daily habits.

Aimee Sayer, the firm's water resources planning manager, said although the heavy rainfall of recent months had replenished reservoirs and groundwater levels, people still need to be conscious of their water usage.

She said: "There are many benefits to saving water. As well as helping the environment, you may also significantly reduce your water and energy bills. It is easy to do and we have a number of personalised tips to help customers considerably reduce their water usage.

"Reduced consumption means that less water needs to be abstracted from the environment. It also means that the amount of energy required to treat and transport water is reduced."
