After Lucy Willcox's father died and left her some money, she was determined to do something to make him proud.

Now, with the help of family and friends, she has launched The Cupcakery, a bakery and shop at the top of Wellsway.

The 26-year-old, who has spent the past nine years working at the Co-op in Moorland Road, has taken the plunge two years after her dad, Paul, died.

"The money he left me sat in the bank for a year and I thought that was silly. I wanted to do something to make him proud," said Lucy, who lives in Fosse Gardens, Odd Down.

"I had always enjoyed baking and dad wouldn't have wanted me to work for somebody else all my life. So I made the decision to go for it."

The shop opened on Saturday, with members of her family having rolled up their sleeves to get it painted, furnished, branded and ready to go.

While she is running the business as a sole trader, Lucy said her mother, Linda Rogers, had played a crucial role in getting the business up and running.

"I learned to bake from my mother and with the support of my wonderful family and friends it's finally all happened," she explained.

"Mum's a real driving force and she's been a big support. She's got everyone together."

Lucy says her signature delicacy is a chocolate fudge cupcake – and believes that the appetite for such sweet treats continues to be strong, despite the squeeze on people's disposable incomes.

"I was a bit wary [of setting up a business during a downturn], but everyone likes a bit of a treat every now and again," said Lucy. "And people go mad for cupcakes."

“This comment thread is hilarious. It seems like a mix of well-reasoned, well-informed comments which are being voted down, and comments of niceness-for-niceness-sake being voted up. Surely the freedom of speech in a forum like this means that people can voice honest, well-meaning opinions regardless of their viewpoint? I feel slightly sorry who think they have to go through life just being uniformly nice to people, it must get quite boring. Feel free to vote this down, I really couldn't care less.”

“Spurred on by the comments on this page, I am pleased to report that I actually went to the Cupcakery and made a purchase. I was very impressed with the cupcakes as well as the service and premises. I am also pleased to report that I didn't see honeybunny55 (surely a misnomer?) with her binoculars - or the proprietor's great mate, Puttx, enjoying a friendly chin-wag. If either of the latter would care for a complimentary cup cake paid for by me, then please get in touch with the editor.”

“I popped in the other day to try a cupcake and have since been back, turns out I can't resist them! Personally I think it's great that theres something so new and fun. People who open a business in a recession should surely be praised? what guts and determination not to mention talent this girl has.”

“Ah Puttx, can you explain to the court the meaning of your last statement? I believe that there has been an error of syntax as you nervously 'type your escape.' Are you now saying you are known to the proprietor of the Cupcakery? Could it be your earlier insults were merely friendly banter? ... An innocent bout of horse-play between friends that was unfairly misconstrued by the the simple Chronicle reader?... A light hearted jape to pour oil on the waters of the many slights this girl has received this week from her very neighbourhood? ... Or... have you taken this opportunity to hide behind your Chronicle nom de plume to ridicule, deride and generally pour scorn upon this girl's venture? ... To publicly mock her endeavours to make good of her life and honour the memory of her late father? ... Well, we're waiting Puttx, we're waiting...”

“This is a fascinating story. A local girl opens a shop and a new business and is welcomed into the bosom of the community. Another derelict shop in the area has new life breathed into it. I can just feel the love emulating from the Odd Down Mafia.... Good luck to her, I say. May all her dreams be fulfilled. It's quite obvious that certain commentators are part-time business advisors - as well as part time community wardens judging by how close an eye they are keeping on the comings and goings of the shop. Well done to you. Nothing like neighbourly spirit to kindle friendship. As for Puttx being a law graduate - absolutely fantastic. Good to know our professionals are not averse to a bit of good-old-fashioned mud slinging based on looks and prejudice. It's a shame that cup cakes aren't to everyone's liking. Perhaps a nail bar and tattoo parlour could open up soon in the old Somerfield store to keep them amused. Community spirit - It's alive and well in Odd Down... I really must come and visit soon.”

“I don't get why a perfectly reasonable question from Rottidog as to the change of use has been red arrowed??? It was a shop, now it's a cafe which I believe has to have a change of use - there is a big row going on elsewhere about change of use at the Packhorse so it's a perfectly good question - is it now a cafe and does it have planning permission? Answer anyone?”

“Good point there by Rottidog - can you simply change a shop into a cafe? I thought it was a different usage. Just come past again and not a lot going on - lolling around looking fed up. Not a good image!”

“I love how the opportunity to comment on this article has led to an outright arguement about cyberbullying!!!!

After reading through the comments on here it is clear to see that no-one has slated this girl for taking it upon herself to do something she believes is a worthwhile end for her father's money. However, we have simply pointed out that in sheer practicality that maybe it isn't money well spent...she may not be making these cupcakes for the longterm and certainly won't be making thousands of pounds for them. It is her fuelling her passion for her hobby which she probally finds more fulfilling then the Co-Op, however we all have to wait and see whether converting this from hobby to business plan will work out.

Each to their own, maybe she has a back up plan?

However, no one has bullied by any stretch of the imagination..ironically until the concept of cyberbullying was brought up by 'PSJresident'!!! Who initiated insults on those who speak opinions that differ from his own (exactly showing the worth and maturity of his opinions). Its a cupcake shop at the end of the day, who cares?! Good on her for taking it upon herself and getting out of one dead end job to another more expensive and risky one.

Everyone stop being so bl**dy petty bickering with eachother over something as trivial as this!!!

(I will now be waiting for further bickering at some comments I have brought up...)”

“Given that there are now tables and chairs in there effectively making it a cafe, has it had a change of use to A3?”
