Saturday's laboured victory against basement dwellers Weymouth has left us just one point and one place off the play-offs.

We now look forward to visiting Welling on Saturday in what should be a quality encounter between two of the most in-form sides in the Blue Square South.

Welling are unbeaten in eight matches and Bath City are unbeaten in seven. The atmosphere should be electric as a number of flag-waving ultras will be travelling and we can rely on a number of well-oiled exiles turning up to give us some loud vocal support.

Last week the Chronicle published an article about the Supporters' Society and I would like to highlight that it has extended an open invitation to all fans, including non members, to attend its annual meeting.

It will take place in Randall's after the Thurrock match on March 6 and I would encourage all fans to get along to hear what the Supporters' Society has achieved and what its hopes are for the future.

I would also encourage fans who can afford it to join the Society as this not only helps to raise funds for the club but provides a real say in what happens to our beloved club.

The Supporters' Society has taken the sensible decision to lower the amount for new members to join to £500. What is even better is this does not have to be paid in one lump sum – it can be paid over an 18-month period at £25 per month after an initial £50 payment.

I am very much of the opinion that fans' ownership of football clubs is to be encouraged. English football is littered with examples of what can go wrong when fans have no say in what happens to their football club.

Wimbledon fans saw their club abducted and moved 80 miles to Milton Keynes. Portsmouth have had almost as many owners this season as they have had points and their supporters face an uncertain future.

At Chester City we have the extraordinary situation of the fans asking the Conference to kick the club out of the league so they can set up a supporters-led phoenix club, as that is the only way they can see the football club surviving.

We are fortunate at Bath City that the fans, through the Society, are the biggest shareholders in the club, currently holding around 12 per cent of the shares.

Not all the share issue has been sold and it is important the Society can increase its shareholding as that would increase the fans' influence on important decisions.

It also helps to safeguard from a hostile takeover and, of course, puts more new money into the club which will help us put an even better team out on the pitch.
