THE Liberal Democrats have selected a former police officer as their candidate for Avon and Somerset Police Commissioner.

Somerset-born Pete Levy began his career as a cadet and then police constable with Wiltshire Constabulary, before spending six years in the Royal Military Police and completing several attachments with the Special Investigations Branch.

He has since spent 15 years working in international corporate and broadcast production. He is currently a city councillor in Horfield and a member of the Avon and Somerset Police Authority, which the commissioner will replace.

Mr Levy said: "The people of Avon and Somerset need a Police Commissioner who knows how the police work and understands how to cut crime.

"With my police, military and communications background, I have the experience to do the job.

"It's about working together – the people, the police and all the authorities – and doing what works."

Ken Maddock, a former leader of Somerset County Council, is the Tory candidate for the post.

The Labour Party selected Bob Ashford, a former councillor from Frome, as its candidate.

The newly-elected commissioner will set the constabulary's budget and the council tax precept to pay for policing. The chief constable, Colin Port, will answer to him.

Police and crime commissioners will be elected in 41 areas across England and Wales on November 15.

“Sue Mountstevens gets my vote. The rest are senior party figures out for themselves and their dogmatic party lines, no doubt hoping to finish their careers with lots of long lunches discussing the intracacies of the preparation of steak diane,
    Vote for Sue”

“No problem Mr L, I only hope your wheelchair doesn't always veer leftwards into the pub doorways... or we may need to take refreshment breaks frequently ;)”

“Hey Babe I won't hear of you taking a plonker out on the doorsteps in my ward, cos I'll probably be in a wheelchair and incontinence pants by the next election, so you're gonna have to push me around Lambridge shouting "VOTE FOR YER INDY AND LEFTY" in a high pitch multi-lingual PC correct mono-tone.”

“If there's ever a reason not to vote Liberal Democrat ever again it's the laughable campaign methods employed by a certain Lib Dem apologist repeating himself on here.

I must admit, I was gearing myself up for the hard slog involved in the PCC and next local and general elections, but no need!

I'm just going to take KBillies along with me to explain in such an imaginitive and persuasive fashion exactly why his Party vote has collapsed.”

“Voting Labour risks putting in a Tory.

Labour pragmatists and moderate Conservatives should vote for Mr Levy.”

“I do not share Viscount-V's politics by any means, but she talks a lot of sense and I agree with everything she says here. I notice the slings and red-arrows of outrageous fortune bedecking her comments which will be water-off-a-duck's-back I imagine. I too would like to know more about the other contenders through the pages of our local paper - local news for local people. I confess that I once voted LibDem but it will be a very long time before I do that again.”

“Personnally I'd welcome a 'prop forward' with the character and leadership qualities of a Phil Vickery or Jason Leonard standing capndave……………

I'm almost with you on that one Green_Man, but maybe we ask Brian Moore if he fancies the job. A legal eagle hooker built like a tank seems to have all the credentials.”

“We've only got until November, they'd have to be quick to start building support. Good luck to them if they have the right qualities and experience. I'm all for opening it out.”
