Bath septuagenarian Peter Wilson has been crowned the national 100-mile veteran time trial champion

The 73-year-old's winning time of 4hrs 42mins 12secs in the Western Time Trials Association 100 equated to a handicapped 3:42:12.

Wilson also led the Bath veterans team into first place at the event in Wiltshire. His team-mates were Derek Pierce (4:44:19) and Alan Pickard (5:22:09).

Completing a 100-mile time trial is cycling's equivalent to running a marathon and all finishers are considered winners. Credit should also be given to Bath's Aileen Brown (5:10:15) for finishing the event.

The overall winner of the non-handicapped event was Stratford on Avon Cycling Club's James Wall, who rode at an average speed of more than 27mph for a new course record of 3:40:15. Jeff Jones, of Chippenham & District Wheelers, also rode a fantastic race to finish just off the pace in 3:41:22 with runner-up Mick St Leger (VC St Raphael) clocking 3:45:11.

Bath Cycling Club organised an evening time trial on the Castle Combe racing circuit.

The unorthodox distance of 21 miles comprised 11 laps of the course and the two-up event attracted a large field of local riders.

After powering around the circuit at an average speed in excess of 29mph, Chippenham duo Dave Ballantyne and Ben Anstie were the convincing winners in a time of 43:42.

Bath's Mark Keyford and James Dobbins finished second with a creditable 45:31 while James Russell and Mark Mumford of Team Bad Tri/Fred Baker Cycles finished third in 46:20.

Dave Summers and Rob Pears (46:27), Tom Ryan and Leon Boulton (49:31), Matt Hargreaves and Mario Pavan (52:37), and veterans Pete and Mike Wilson (53:58) also completed the event for the host club, while solo riders Tony Thorne and Aileen Brown finished in 55:30 and 1:00:33 respectively.
