Energy levels take a dip
Youngsters at a Bath school have been learning more about the environment with a zero energy day.
St Saviour's Infant School decided to live without electricity to teach pupils how people survived without it in the past. They set up a Saxon encampment in the school garden, learnt to cook on a camp fire and listened to stories told by candlelight. They also had a zero energy hour in the afternoon when all non-essential equipment was switched off so they could see the dip in the school's electricity monitoring meter.
Headteacher Ed Harker said it was important that children learnt about environmental issues.
He said: "I think getting them into the habit of thinking now that what we have around is finite and that we need to take care of it, the better we all will be in the future."
The school has already achieved its bronze award in the national Eco-schools scheme and is working towards its silver status.
