After more than seven hours of searching, drainage engineer Dave Scanes was ready to give up the battle to find a customer’s precious engagement ring.

But just as he was packing up his tools and replacing the manhole cover, he had one more look.

And that was when the Dyno Rod worker spotted Sian Robbins’ beloved Tiffany ring.

Mrs Robbins broke down in tears at delight after the discovery outside her home in Bradford on Avon.

Mrs Robbins, who has been married for nearly two years to her husband Adam, had accidentally dropped the ring down the toilet as she took it off before having a shower.

After trying to find it herself, she called the drain firm, which sent Mr Scanes from Bristol, armed with a CCTV drainage camera.

Mr Scanes removed 100 gallons of dirty water from the drains upstream of the manhole, battling with silt and rain, and working through the day without so much as a coffee break.

After seven hours, he was about to admit defeat and started to pack up his equipment when he had one last look.

He said: “I had been searching for the ring for over seven hours, I was absolutely soaked through as it was raining, but I was determined to find the ring for Mrs Robbins, as I knew how much it meant to her.

“I was overwhelmed when I saw the ring in the manhole. The proudest moment was when I gave the ring back to her and I saw the delight in her face. Everything I had gone through was worth it.”

Mrs Robbins added: “I was devastated when I thought I had lost my engagement ring as it meant so much to me, but Dave was very reassuring from the beginning and he really did his very best to get it back.

“He literally went the extra mile. He spent hours in the rain, working out ways to find my ring and he was in such high spirits, he just kept on going.

“As soon as the ring was found I started crying. I was absolutely elated.”
