David Cameron, the Conservative Party leader, tells us that his is a "modern and compassionate" party.

But about the only firm commitment he has given is to introduce a bill to overturn the ban on hunting wild mammals with dogs, a former hobby of his.

In what sense is restoring the mediaeval barbarity and cruelty of such blood sports either modern or compassionate?

His fanatical enthusiasm for the organised harrying and slaughter of defenceless animals for 'sport' clearly shows the unpleasant reality behind the "modern and compassionate" image.

It will concern all decent minded and civilised people in Bath to learn that the Tory candidate for the city has pledged he would vote to re-legalise stag hunting, hare coursing and fox hunting should he and his party win the election.

“David cameron obviously has no compassion for animals and neither does anyone who hunts - it is barbaric and I have seen a fox being killed by a hunt - it was horrific and yes i have lives in rural Suffolk all my life and ahve both chickens and sheep and still love our native wildlife - pity the tories don't - there is no joy in hunting unless you are twisted”

“Mr Gale, if you are going to say things then please be accurate in what you say, if David Cameron gets in he has offered a free vote, this is very different to what you have said, I would also question the so called 70% quoted by someone else ans finally to say the Countryside Alliance was the one who put David Cameron in as leader of the Conservative Party, well that is such rubbish that it's laughable.”

“" ... David Cameron was selected to lead the conservative party by the Countryside Alliance ... "

Says it all, doesn't it? The CA practically runs the Tory party these days and they are only in it for the beer (no, not the beer, the fox hunting, the hare coursing and the stag hunting).

If Cameron really cared he would forswear all of those so-called 'sports' and campaign on his party's other merits and/or policies - a dodgy job, admittedly, but he should try.

“I live in the countryside and it is a myth that people like myself support hunting. Indeed, I would say most country people don't want hunting. I think around the time of the ban about 70% of country people were against it.

The Countryside Alliance is trying to wrap up all the problems of rural dwellers in a neat package and say it's support for hunting. Nothing could be further from the truth. They are definitely not all things to all men in the countryside.

I shall not be voting for David Cameron's party as long as he continues to support the Countryside Alliance and threaten to repeal the hunting ban.”

“In fact the general public understands hunting only too well - which is why it sees it as an atavistic barbarism. The joys of hunting are a group high gained from pursuit and killing of a vulnerable living creature, as we all know. But as with many appalling human mob practices, such as lynching, the actual nature of the pleasure is never really admitted to, but rather covered up with justificatory myths. It is a fact with very serious implications that David Cameron is a member of such a group. As Mr Forbes-Grey states, he has been made leader of the Conservative party by the Countryside Alliance, who are themselves putting hunting at the centre of the election.”

“David Cameron was selected to lead the conservative party by the Countryside Alliance when Michael Howard stood down.
He is a member of the countryside set and understands the joys of hunting. It is a minority sport and we do not expect the general public to understand it.
It will not be a big election issue as people are more worried about their jobs and public services.

Rest assure hunting will return to normal next season and no one will stop us!”
