A body pulled from the River Avon yesterday has been confirmed as that of a 50-year-old man.

Police today said that the man had been identified but they were still trying to contact more relatives.

The death is not thought to be suspicious.

Police and firefighters searched the river yesterday after a man's body had been spotted by passers-by in the morning.

The police, fire and ambulance services were all called to Victoria Bridge Road after they received a call at 10am.

The Bath-based fire service rescue boat was used in the search but police also called in a specialist police dive team, which eventually found the body.

“What a sobering tragedy. I thought I was having a bad day, but events like this put it into perspective, and remind us how lucky we are to have such committed and professional emergency services.”
