The Dyson Centre at the Royal United Hospital has been highly commended in national building design awards.

The neonatal intensive care unit was highly commended in the design and innovation category at this year's RICS Awards.

The winner of the South West regional heats in the same category, the centre funded by the NHS and the Forever Friends Appeal had been shortlisted along with 12 other projects from all over the UK.

It was pipped to the post by a school building in Darlington, which took the national category title.

The centre opened in July last year, replacing existing cramped facilities for sick babies at the hospital.

The biggest donor to the appeal was from Sir James Dyson's charitable foundation.

Judges agreed that detailed research into the particular needs of neonatal intensive care provision and an innovative approach to design had produced a building which is an oasis of calm, security and privacy at the heart of a busy general hospital.

The design process involved extensive consultation with staff and parents' groups.

The judges said: "Assembled on site in just a few weeks, the building uses sustainable timber load- bearing panels without beams or columns.

"This unusual design and quality of interior spaces/ natural lighting offers a practical and elegant solution to specialised healthcare buildings."

David Fuell, director at Edmond Shipway, the chartered surveyor on the project designed by Bath firm Feilden Clegg said: "I am absolutely delighted that the pioneering approach applied to the design and construction of the Dyson Centre has been recognised by RICS.

"We were extremely proud to be selected as one of the highly commended schemes from such a strong national category."
