The woman, who has not been named by police, sustained serious head injuries and was taken to hospital where she later died.

The driver and passengers in the Ford Focus were unharmed.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident and have asked anyone with any information to contact PC Chris Penny on 08454087000 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800555111.

The spot is the same one where a triathlete from Bath was killed 14 years ago.

“My condolences to the family and my sympathy to the driver i myself have been in this situation and it's not very nice, people are to quick to judge you without knowing the truth off what's happen.”

“i have to defend drivers. i have seen on many occasions that cyclists have a complete disregard for road rules and regulations. they go through red lights, across crossings and weave through traffic on all sides with a complete lack of due care and attention. yet in time of accidents when a cyclists is hurt or injured and are at fault who can the car claim from. no one. i believe that cyclists should have to pay a nominal insurance fee. they are free to claim from motorist so why shouldn't motorists be able to claim from them when it is there fault. i am on neither side with this arguement. i know that some drivers too do not look for cyclist or motor cylists. in short both are as bad as each other. there needs to be some form of awareness campaighn for both parties to reiterate the rules and regulations of the road and how one should travel on the road.”

“I hate having to defend myself but my comments were in response to Luke's post.
I apologise for the lack of direction.
But my comments still stand, British drivers in general( and in no way am I talking in anyway about the incident that this article deals with), have a distinct lack of care for cyclist's, compared to places like France and in Holland, both of which I've cycled in many times.”

“Can I just echo Mike's comments. This is NOT the place for speculation about the causes of this crash or any others - for reasons of taste as well as legality. Thank you for your co-operation.”

“It seems to me that certain correspondents are pre-judging the car driver: "Some people really have no care for other road users.", "much tougher penalties to make drivers stop and think about their road use". In this country, if a crime is suspected, the suspect is innocent until proven guilty. Wait for the facts guys, this incident is tragic enough without imposing your value judgements on it.”

“Sincere condolences to the family of a fellow cyclist.
When will drivers cotton on that we take up very little room the road, we just need a little bit more space at times and they won't get "there" any faster.
Cycling is a high risk activity in England, instead of a normal commuting method, and too many road users view us as cranks and a nuisance; this view is lethal.
Again, it is about personal responsibility, as well as the fear of being caught: much tougher penalties to make drivers stop and think about their road use...”

“I'd like to also offer my condolences as a fellow cyclist.

Perhaps its appropriate that something is now done to stop any other family having to go through this sort of grief again.

Some people really have no care for other road users.”

“My sincere condolences to the family of this lady, I ride this route weekly and its lethal at all times. The narrow section over Bybrook with the double white lines is a death trap, motorists would rather mow down a cyclist than SLOW DOWN or cross the double white lines. I have had so many close calls along this road, you can't even escape and use the pavement as its over grown and broken up, the drains are lethal many of them broken up, you have trees and folliage growing on to the road and the section coming out of Box down the hill after the traffic lights is like a dirt track from the third world certainly not befitting of a road to a world heritage city. RIP, such a horrible incident.”
