Cyclist attacked in road rage incident on village lane
A cyclist from Bath was attacked in a bust-up with a motorist over his driving.
The attack followed an incident in which the cyclist and a friend on another bike accused the driver of cutting them up on a road in Neston near Corsham.
The rider fell from his bike and was then assaulted by the well-built driver.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened at around 4.15pm last Tuesday, July 20, but details of which were not released by police until today.
The cyclists had been cycling through Neston towards Westwells when, they said, a man driving a red saloon car cut one of them up.
A police spokesman said: “An altercation ensued which resulted in the cyclist falling from his bike and then being assaulted by the driver.”
The attack took place between the Neston Country Inn and Neston Primary School.
The victim, a 52-year-old man from Bath, received cuts and bruises to his face and a swollen ear.
The driver of the car is described as a white man, approximately 6’2” tall, between 40 and 50 years old, well built, with short fair or grey hair and wearing a light blue t-shirt.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or knows the identity of the driver is asked to contact Heather Osak in the Crime Management Unit at Melksham on 0845 408 7000 extension 728609 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information may be left anonymously.

“PW, perhaps it wasn't entirely obvious at the time that the driver was 'well built'.
So perhaps you're arguing that cyclists should just accept anything that's coming their way from any motorist. If that's the case, then let's hope that meek shall indeed inherit the earth.”

“If these men were faced with the 'well built' driver in a night club or on a street, I sincerely doubt they would abuse him verbally, so why are they surprised that when said man is insulted he gets out of car and assaults them? I'm not defending his actions, merely pointing out the folly of taking on strangers in cars.”

“From the report here we don't know much about what actually happened. So I shall continue to not comment.”

“"instead of wasting time on petty nonsense which doesn't harm anyone?" It certainly harmed my daughter when she was hit by a cyclist in a pedestrian area! And as far as I am aware, pavement cycling is against the law, so technically, it is an 'actual crime'.
No excuse for ignorant behaviour from a small minority of motorists, but equally, no excuse for ignorant behaviour from a small minority of cyclists.”

“Isn't it time the police had an operation to protect cyclists from drivers. Now I've never been assaulted but I've been shouted out, had cigarette butts flicked at me, spat at, had other rubbish thrown at me, insults, people overtaking you with inchs between you and the car. In the last year, there have been two "operations" to stop people riding on the pavements or running red lights. How about they launch an operation to stop actual crimes being perpetrated against cyclists instead of wasting time on petty nonsense which doesn't harm anyone?”
