Bath City chairman Geoff Todd says yesterday's FA Cup win at Grimsby Town was just reward for the club's supporters - and hopes it will attract more fans to Twerton Park.

More than 200 City supporters made the long journey to North-East Lincolnshire to cheer Adie Britton's men on to a famous victory and a place in today's second round draw.

The fans have also been busy during the past few months raising money towards City's playing budget with a series of activities including sponsored walks and cycle rides.

And Todd said the 2-0 victory at Blundell Park, courtesy of goals from Chris Holland and Darren Edwards, was the perfect way for the players and officials to say thank you.

"This win rewards the effort the fans have put in this year," he said.

"We had a very honest discussion with them back in April where we said we couldn't see how we could sustain the same budget we had last year because we couldn't see where the money was coming from.

"But the supporters stood up and said 'we can help, we can do more, we'll do cycle rides, sponsored walks, all sorts of different things'. Well, they've done them and they are still organising more.

"It's worth saying that all the people on the board are supporters as well, we've all put in 20, 30, 40 years on the terrace. Because of that, you feel like we are all in it together, that everyone cares about this club and they want it to succeed.

"All credit to the supporters who travelled. It is a long journey up here and most of them will have left in the early hours. They supported the team tremendously - they sang all the way through and I am very, very proud of them."

Todd, who descibed yesterday's win as 'one of the great moments in Bath City's history', hopes the success will encourage more people to take an interest in the club.

"I hope this cup run catches the imagination of a few people," he said. "I sometimes meet people who say 'I know the rugby club but I don't know Bath City, where do you play?'.

"We don't really have the large profile that we had a few years ago, non-league clubs have suffered a bit because of the overexposure of Premiership clubs.

"But now we have an opportunity to catch people's imagination. People might look at this result and say 'oh, City have beaten Grimsby, I might go down next week and watch a game'.

"That's the lifeblood of the club, nobody wants to be playing to an empty stadium. Hopefully we can put some numbers on the terraces, we might get a good draw in the second round, we might even be on TV - if these things happen it gives us a chance to safeguard the club's future because it boosts the revenue.

"That is vital for getting us to the next stage, which must be the redevelopment of Twerton Park or perhaps ground-sharing with Bath Rugby. Those things need to be planned and we need the finances to do that."

Todd predicted City would draw Grimsby in the first round, and that they would win, but is being more circumspect about this afternoon's second-round draw.

"Whoever we get, I think if we perform like we did at Grimsby we have a real chance of getting through to the third round and that is the dream of every non-league club," he said.

"I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we get a match which is interesting for us - whether that means a non-league team at Twerton Park or Leeds United at Elland Road I'm not quite sure.

"Either way I hope it will be a fair reward for the effort put in by the players and supporters."
