Motorists can now put their cars through an MoT at a new council depot.

Bath and North East Somerset Council has moved its fleet transport depot from Windsor Bridge to Locksbrook Road and is offering MoTs to the public for the first time.

The authority says – in comments echoed by personal finance writer Martin Lewis on his Money Saving Expert website – that it offers value for money because it does not do repairs and so has no incentive to find bogus faults.

The depot offers MoTs for cars, minibuses with between 13 and 16 seats, and goods vehicles between three tonnes and 3.5 tonnes.

Council cabinet member for transport Councillor Roger Symonds (Lib Dem, Combe Down) said: "We are raising awareness of this facility so that everyone in our area and beyond can use it to check the safety of their vehicle through the MoT test.

"What people should remember is that we are not looking to create an income from work required if a vehicle fails."
