Max Cornelius moved within touching distance of the Autosport Young Guns title after claiming the sixth race victory of his debut season at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit on Sunday.

The 16-year-old, who recently completed his GCSEs at St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon, dominated a rain-shortened qualifying session to take pole position for both races over the weekend.

He then scorched away from closest rival Patryk Szczerbinski to win the first 20-minute race on lap 25, posting a fastest lap of 46.917secs (91.97mph) and lapping fellow former karter Russell Danzey in the process.

In race two Cornelius fended off a late charge from James Nutbrown to finish second and claim his eighth successive podium finish.

Cornelius left Brands Hatch satisfied with his weekend's work and looking forward to the season finale at Thruxton in nine days' time.

"I'm really delighted to have taken my sixth win of the year, it's a fantastic tally from 11 race starts and I'm fully focused on winning the championship now," he said.

"It's really close between me and Patryk for the title so it's all to play for at Thruxton, I can't wait to get there and hopefully get the job done."

Cornelius is seeking additional funding for the last race of the season. Anyone who can help is asked to call Jonathan Davis on 07876 566182 or email sponsorship@maxcornelius.com.
