A campaign to encourage more people in Bath to become organ donors has been supported throughout the city.

The Chronicle last month launched the Give the Gift of Life campaign, to urge more people to sign up to the NHS organ donor register.

It has won the support of city MP Don Foster, who is on the register himself.

More than 10,000 people in the UK need an organ transplant - but three people a day die before an organ is available.

There is a serious shortage of organs, and the gap between the number of organs donated and the number of people waiting for a transplant is increasing.

Mr Foster said: “I have been carrying my organ donor card since 1991, and I would encourage everyone who feels able to sign up for organ donation.

“However, I think it’s important that you discuss this move with next of kin, so that they are aware of your decision.”

The campaign has the backing of Bath mayor, Councillor Colin Barrett.

He said: “I think organ donation is crucial, and there is a need for more donors.

“People are not always aware or organ donation, and need to be educated.

“There needs to be more information about organ donation out there, so that more people sign up.

“The campaign to get more organ donors in Bath is brilliant, and one I really support.”

B&NES Council chair Bryan Chalker said: “Organ donation is the ultimate in recycling.

“There is a sense of trepidation about it, and also there are cultural beliefs that have to be taken into account, but I believe it is such a worthwhile thing to do.

“It allows people to continue to live.

“I think people should do whatever they can to help, and to save a life.”

The campaign has been launched as Bath prepares to welcome 1,500 athletes from all over the country for the British Transplant Games in August.

Run by Transplant Sport UK, the games are open to anyone who has had an organ transplant, and offers them the chance to compete in events such as archery, squash, athletics and cycling.

Trustee Lynne Holt said: “For many competitors, transplantation heralds their participation in sport and it’s the energy and determination of the athletes that makes the British Transplant Games such a special event.

“It offers a true picture of how successful organ donation can transform the life of participants.”

People can sign up to become organ donors by calling 0300 1232323, or visiting www.organdonation.nhs.uk.

“Being a professional smoker, a registered Guinness drinker and a world renowned womaniser, my doctor has requested that I return all my donor cards. But if there's anyone out there that would benefit from my body parts (after I'm gone of course) then I'd be only too pleased to do a deal.”
