Bath City boss Adie Britton has challenged his strikers to secure a regular starting place by getting the goals which fire his team up the table.

City find themselves in the bottom four after picking up just one point over a Bank Holiday weekend which saw them draw a blank against both Forest Green Rovers and Wrexham.

Darren Edwards, Kaid Mohamed and Jake Reid were all given the chance to play alongside Lee Phillips for extended periods of those games but none were able to stake a decisive claim on the second striker's spot.

Now, with City bidding to bounce back against fellow newly-promoted side Barrow on Saturday (3pm), Britton is keen to see his forwards provide some firepower.

"We have a few injuries at the moment but the only area when I have the option to change things around is up front," he said.

"If there is an area of our game where we need to improve it's in the final third. I was pleased with the number of chances we created in the first four games but there were relatively few opportunities on Saturday and Monday.

"I have got to work with the front lads to get the right combination up front and I have also got to work with the midfield to ensure they provide effective supply and support.

"We will get it right, it is just a case of when – and I hope we don't have to wait too long."

After the Barrow game City will get their first full week off after a hectic start to the season, which had clearly taken its toll on the players during Monday's home defeat to Wrexham.

"The lads have just been doing recovery work the last few days because most of them are carrying knocks and strains," said Britton.

"In truth we cannot wait for next week to come around because we will actually have two training sessions and the chance to work on a few things.

"A lot of people think we can just change the side around and play different systems at the drop of a hat but you cannot do that at this level – you have to be fully prepared and drilled otherwise you will get ripped apart.

"We've just had a mad schedule of fixtures but we have got through them and we haven't done too badly. I don't think we have got quite what we deserved from the games and if we'd held on for a win against York we'd be sitting in mid-table.

"Apart from the second half on Monday and the first half at Crawley, which was my fault as I got the tactics wrong, I think we have been competitive and looked quite strong as a unit.

"If we can knock it up another five or ten per cent in the weeks to come then we'll be OK."

Britton may have to make defensive changes on Saturday, though, as both Sekani Simpson (bruised toe) and Sido Jombati (swollen knee) are doubtful.

Luke Ruddick and Scott Murray remain two or three weeks away from returning to the squad, while Lewis Hogg has two matches of his suspension to serve following his red card at Forest Green.

There will be a reunion of past City players at the Barrow game, with Martin Paul, Mike Davis, Stuart James, Mike Wyatt, Nicky Brooks, Ian Murphy, Paul Chenoweth, Colin Towler and Ian Hedges meeting fans in the bar before kick-off.
