Britton: City can be the best in the West
Bath City boss Adie Britton will challenge his players to prove they are the best in the West when they take on local rivals Forest Green Rovers in a mouth-watering FA Cup tie.
Rovers beat Mansfield Town 2-1 in a replay on Tuesday to set up a showdown with City at Twerton Park on Saturday week, ensuring one non- league club from the West Country will be joining the Premiership big guns in the third round.
And Britton is determined it will be his team who progress, saying it is not just a place in the history books at stake but also local pride.
"This is the game we wanted," the City boss admitted. "It is a game to show who is the best non-league side in the West Country.
"Forest Green have been in the ascendancy for the past 10 years but we were on top before that and we want to get back up there.
"We want to be competing with them on a regular basis and, as I am sure they will stay in the Conference Premier this season, we need to get up to their level in the next year or two.
"Rovers are a good footballing side and it will be an interesting game but it should not hold any fear for us. It is very much like the last round against Grimsby – if they have a bad day and we play well we can beat them."
Britton was at Field Mill on Tuesday to watch the replay which Rovers won thanks to an injury-time strike from Conal Platt, who had also scored their opening goal.
The result was something of a surprise as Mansfield are fourth in the Blue Square Premier while Rovers are in the relegation zone but Britton said they were deserved winners on the night.
"They were by far the superior team and played some great football," he said.
"People's perceptions may be that because Mansfield were a Football League club in the past they must be the better team but, to be honest, it might have been easier for us had we been playing them.
"They were a physical team but had no pace and I could not see on that evidence how they are a play-off team.
"Forest Green, on the other hand, have dramatically improved.
"They were disorganised, disjointed and did not seem to have any motivation when I saw them earlier in the season. But Dave Hockaday has come in as manager and got them organised.
"Their league position doesn't take into account their recent form but then neither does ours. On the basis of the past month we are one of the better teams in our division."
The tie will kick-off at 3pm on Saturday, November 28 with a replay taking place at The New Lawn on Wednesday, December 9 if necessary.
Advance tickets are now on sale for stand seats, priced £15 for adults, £6 for under-16s and £10 concessions.
Entrance to the terrace will only be available via the turnstiles on the day, priced £13 for adults, £5 for under-16s and £9 concessions.
