City of Bath College students on hand to give massages to Bath Half Marathon runners at the end of the race

Runners taking part in this Sunday’s Bath Half Marathon will be able to give their aching legs a treat at the end of the race thanks to students from the City of Bath College.

Complementary therapies and spa students are giving up their time to give free massages to runners at the finish line in Great Pulteney Street.

They will be setting up six beds in the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Trust’s marquee in the runners’ village on the Rec.

Course leader Di Rowe said: “The Bath Half Marathon will provide our students with the perfect opportunity to practice their massage techniques on weary runners.

“It will give them excellent experience of the world of work and will be a relaxing experience for runners at the end of their gruelling half marathon.”

Students have also teamed up with the Golden Oldies group to offer massages to the charity’s runners the day after the race.

Several people are expected to visit the college for post marathon massages next Monday.

It comes as several college staff are finishing off their last minute training in preparation for Sunday’s race.

Health, care and early years lecturer Suzanna Wheeler who will be running it for the first time as she has “run out of excuses and put it off for so long”.

The mum-of-two is raising money for the Send A Cow charity, which helps African farmers grow enough food to feed their families, and will be cheered on by her two children, six-year-old Alfie and Jamie, three.

She said: “Every year I’d say that I was going to do it, but just the thought of it would make me chicken out.

“I’ve always managed to come up with a reason but I can’t put it off any longer, this is the year.”
