Every young footballer dreams of being plucked from the relative obscurity of their home-town team and signing for the European champions but by the age of 43 even the most optimistic of dreamers have to concede their time has past.

But for former Bath City star Adie Mings, that dream has finally – after 25 years of non-league football – come true . . . sort of.

For the ex-Chippenham Town manager, who recently moved ‘upstairs’ to become the club's director of football, has been signed up by none other than Champions League winners Chelsea to be their eyes and ears in the West Country.

Adie's new role will see him scouting around the young teenagers of the South West looking for the next Frank Lampard or Ashley Cole as the west London’s regional chief scout.

The news was broken to Chippenham fans, many of whom remember Mr Mings as a Town youth team player in the late 1980s, during the loss to Hitchin Town on Saturday.

A local Chippenham lad, Adie started his career with the Bluebirds before playing with a number of leading non-league clubs, including Gloucester, Forest Green Rovers and Bath City.

He returned to see out his playing days as player-assistant manager, before taking the manager’s seat for five years from 2006. Last season, he switched to be director of football, but has now left the club altogether, to work for Chelsea.

“Adie now leaves his post with our thanks and best wishes for the future,” said Chippenham director Barry Stephens.
