People planning to take part in next year's Bath Half Marathon are being urged to run for a hospital cancer care appeal.

The Forever Friends Appeal has been chosen by race organisers as one of the official charities, being named the event's featured appeal.

Reserved silver bond places are now available, and people are being encouraged to sign up to be part of Ted's Team, as the appeal works to improve cancer services at the Royal United Hospital.

The appeal is in the second phase of its Cancer Care Campaign, and is raising £5 million towards the cost of building a new treatment centre at the RUH.

Appeal events and community officer Jo Hones said: "We have all been touched by cancer, if not personally then through friends, relatives or neighbours.

"We are therefore looking for as many people to set themselves the challenge of running the Bath Half and being part of the campaign that truly will help transform cancer services at the RUH.

"Being selected as featured appeal is a real honour and we hope that the people of Bath, north east Somerset and Wiltshire will get on board and help us achieve this goal."

People keen to join Ted's Team - named after the appeal mascot Big Ted - will need to pay an initial donation of £35, and pledge to raise a minimum sponsorship of £175.

Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis for the race on March 3.

Organiser Running High's charity director Mel Taylor said the appeal had been selected because its work benefitted so many local people.

"We have supported the charity since it started back in 1999, and it has been fantastic to see the developments at the hospital over the years.

"It wouldn't be possible without the Bath Half runners and their family, friends and colleagues who continue to give generously year in and out, so we would like to extend enormous thanks to them and encourage them to sign up to run for the Forever Friends Appeal again."
