Bus drivers guilty of dropping cigarettes
It is heartening to read that B&NES is endeavouring to address the litter problem in Bath.
However, I hasten to add that while regularly waiting at the No 2 and No 13 bus stop at the bus station I constantly witness bus drivers either dropping cigarette ends where they stand or, even worse, dropping them in the rain water drain at the bus stop.
I recently made eye contact with one such driver in his process of dropping it into the water course and shook my head in disbelief. His blank expression only served to convince me that as far as he was concerned this practice is quite acceptable.
There is an obvious urgent need for an industrial cigarette ash tray to be placed outside the bus station where bus drivers congregate and cannot be beyond the budget of B&NES or First's purse. I'm sure the sight of an ash tray is a far less inducement to taking up smoking than a carpet of cigarette butts where people, young and old, gather for anything up to half an hour periods.

“"The whole area of the bus station and the pavement outside should be made smoke-free."
I would guess that would be rather impractical due to its location just outside the city's main transport interchange. Maybe you could campaign for electric buses?”

“There is a problem with people using the pavement area outside the bus station on Dorchester Street as a general smoking area. The inside of the bus station is very clean and tidy, but outside it is littered with cigarette butts, and if you want to wait there on a pleasant summer afternoon for a bus, you have to contend with cigarette smoke. The whole area of the bus station and the pavement outside should be made smoke-free. If we want people to travel more extensively on buses in the city, then lets bring it all up to date and make it smoke free.
With regard to bus drivers smoking, I have seen drivers let people onto the bus in Dorchester Street, then get off and smoke by the side of the bus in full view of all, then discard the butt in the gutter and get back on to drive away. This might have been alright in Reg Varney days, but seems unprrofessional these days.”
