Businesses in the Bath area look set to benefit from faster broadband speeds thanks to two multi-million pound deals announced with BT.

Local authorities in B&NES, Somerset, Wiltshire, Devon and South Gloucestershire have agreed deals with the telecommunications firm to deliver high-speed fibre broadband to around 90 per cent of premises in the region by the end of 2016.

The deal will also ensure a minimum broadband speed of 2Mbps.

Connecting Devon and Somerset, a consortium of councils from the two counties including B&NES Council, agreed to the £94 million project.

It is hoped faster broadband will help local businesses find new customers and become more competitive and efficient.

B&NES Council cabinet member for sustainable communities, Councillor Cherry Beath (Lib Dem, Combe Down), said: "Superfast broadband will enable even our smallest businesses to compete on a level playing field with other companies nationally and internationally.

"It'll mean a big boost to our economy... and families in rural areas will be able to enjoy all the benefits of our digital age, such as downloading films and music, which have so far been denied them."

“The article talks about a benefit to businesses in Bath with faster broadband speeds. But Cherry Beath's comment then refers to families in rural areas being able to enjoy the benefits.
Is this a boost just for businesses as the opening line states, or are we all going to benefit. Will there be additional cost or will I be able to get higher than the 4Mbps of the 24 Mbps that I am paying for?”
