Adie Britton accepted the plaudits of a large contingent of travelling fans chanting his name after Bath City beat relegation-threatened Weston-super-Mare 2-0 to kick off the holiday programme in style.

However, the manager readily accepted his popularity has not always been so high.

"I don't think they liked me so much a couple of months ago,” said Britton after seeing his side climb to eighth place in the Blue Square South table.

“I seem to remember at the end of September I was not exactly the most popular man in the world"

"This was not the greatest performance but it was a professional performance.

“I thought Darren (Edwards) did well to get his two goals although he also had a couple more chances.

“I also thought Kaid (Mohamed) did very, very well. He came off the midfield players and turned and ran at them. As he drew defenders he then released other players.

“Probably it was more comfortable than 2-0 on the day.

"On the day were nice and solid and I though there was really only ever going to be one winner. Weston have some good individual players but when you are down towards relegation then you lose confidence.”

Britton revealed that two-goal hero Edwards’ second-half substitution had been made with Monday’s clash home against Havant & Waterlooville (3pm) in mind.

He said: “We were conscious throughout the second half of trying to save energy with given that we have another game on Monday.

“Darren had a bit of a tweak to his hamstring which was why we took him off early in the second half. We didn't want to take any risks with him.

“Looking ahead we are aware that Monday is going to be a difficult game coming only two days after today. When games are so close together is more about application and attitude than about ability so we just have to hope that nobody wakes up with any problems before then.”

City are just a point off the play-off places following their win over Weston, who they meet again at Twerton Park on New Year’s Day.

"It would be nice to put a run of victories together and start having a run at the top of the table,” said Britton.

“Last year in the second half of the season we never managed to string four victories together. This year I think we have the confidence and the ability to do that."
