Bell pub in Bath to be put up for sale
One of Bath’s most distinctive pubs is to be put up for sale.
Staff at the Bell Inn in Walcot Street were told by owner Ian Wood last night that he would be putting it on the market.
He says his heart is no longer in running the pub, which he describes as “the best in the world.”
The Bell developed out of a 18th century coaching inn has a regional reputation for its real ales, live music and independent spirit.

A tweet from the @thebellinnbath account last night said: “Staff meeting this evening Ian announced, with great regret, that it’s time for him to move on.”
Earlier, it had said: “The Bell is being sold. This is not a joke. The owner, Ian Wood, has just posted it on Facebook.”
The message on Facebook reads: “Dear community of Walcot, it is with great sadness that I am announcing that my time at the Bell is going to come to an end, I’m going to sell up.
“It’s been 23 great years and now it is time for someone else to take the pub over. I am very proud of the eclectic team of people who make this pub so special. There is such a great feeling of community and such humour, I will really miss the place, it is by far the best pub in the world. It is an institution, thank you all for making it so special. Owning a pub like this has been the fulfilment of a dream, but this dream I was having many years ago. I now have new dreams and a new direction, and my heart is not in it any more. One love to you all, it’s been special x.”
Meanwhile, another city pub is under new management.
The New Westhall in Upper Bristol Road has been taken over by Banwell House, which also runs pubs in Trowbridge, Chapsmanlade and Holcombe.
It has been rebranded as the Victoria Pub and Kitchen and will reopen on November 30.
