Bath vicar tells of ‘shame’ over bride’s arrest
A Bath vicar says his congregation are shocked and ashamed after a bride-to-be was arrested minutes before her wedding in an administrative mix-up.
The Rev Patrick Whitworth, the vicar at All Saints Church in Weston, said parishioners were stunned when a wedding there had to be abandoned on Saturday because the bride had been arrested by police.

Officers from the Avon and Somerset force apprehended the woman on behalf of the Border Agency as she was making her way to the ceremony.
The woman – who is originally from Malawi – was questioned and held in police custody overnight before being released without charge on Sunday after what is understood to be a case of mistaken identity.

Mr Whitworth said: “I’ve had people who are late for weddings but never seen anyone detained. We have been very shocked by what’s happened and slightly ashamed that people from other countries are treated in this kind of way.”
No apology has been issued to the woman, who does not want to be identified. Police referred inquiries to the agency, where a press officer said it was “not appropriate” for him to apologise for the distress caused by the arrest but said she could make a formal complaint.
The 35-year-old bride had chosen to marry in the Weston church because her family have been members there for eight years. The woman now lives and works in the USA but her parents and sister still live in the city.
Mr Whitworth said the woman was in the UK for ten days to marry her 32-year-old fiance, who is also from Malawi, and who is studying business at university in London.
The couple’s reception at Garfunkel’s in Orange Grove also had to be abandoned.
A police officer had visited the church office last Friday to check the paperwork for the wedding.
Mr Whitworth said: “We invited the officer to the wedding rehearsal that night but he did not come back. We thought it had been resolved, but the next thing we know we were waiting half an hour after the service was due to start, thinking she was late, but later found out she had been detained by officers at the bottom of the lane.”
He added: “Our question is Why if they had questions to ask why didn’t they ask them on the Friday or before the ceremony and this could have been avoided?”
The couple were finally able to marry at the church on Monday afternoon.

“".......It is odd that those that live here are the most vocal. I'm not sure what makes you British, using Anil's logic then I guess I might be French, Anglo-Saxon, Viking etc....."
Er? Live here? Some of the time, maybe. Until I can get ALL my pension that I paid for over 3 decades; instead of letting the UK govt grab it back. Once I wrap things up here, then hopefully I wont be applying for a winter fuel allowance if it's around at the time I reach eligible age.
"Anil, I'm sorry mate, you've spent a lot more years here than in your country of birth, you intend to stay here and you will die here - in my book that makes you British."
If you say so. But I don't intend living here. It was nice, thanks and I have contributed well to UK taxes over several decades, unlike some other British-born who are always trying to avoid it and stash money elsewhere. Britain is a fine country, no doubt about that - albeit one of the most expensive to live in -but it's global stance is total and utter hypocrisy.
On the one hand it loses no opportunity in carping about and lecturing everyone of human rights, upholding decency etc. Then when the same people whom it accuses of all the wrongdoings turn around and say:"....here mate, got some guns to sell? How about some heavy military and torture equipment? 50 Rolls Royce Silver ghosts?" Britain always turns around and says;" why yes! Come in, have a cup of tea...we didn't really mean what we said before about you...." Soon, several million gbp have changed hands.
So colonialism hasn't changed. It's just taken another form. As a bath university academic described it: "the UK aid model is one of pure colonialism. First we give generous aid. Then we sell weapons to the same country, usually to all sides fighting each other. So we recoup the aid. That further destabilises that country. Then we give them aid...." I know somewhere the UK did that for the past 30 years.
While it was doing that, China built roads, railways, harbours and airports. As they tend to bring a large workforce with them, Sri lanka now has a sizeable chinese community. From what I can see and hear, that has regenerated many areas, added to its global mix and brought stability.”

“Isn't it funny that people are so keen to blame others for everything. I dare say the British are responsible for everything from all the world wars, climate change, the extinction of the dinosaurs, and every crime imaginable. It's like the perpetrators had no hand in it at all.
It is odd that those that live here are the most vocal. I'm not sure what makes you British, using Anil's logic then I guess I might be French, Anglo-Saxon, Viking etc.
Anil, I'm sorry mate, you've spent a lot more years here than in your country of birth, you intend to stay here and you will die here - in my book that makes you British. Don't worry, I don't doubt that we'll find you a nice little plot in a cemetery where in the afterlife you can keep claiming you are not British. You never know Anil, they might dig you up in a few thousand years and claim you are the lost king of England.”

“No surprise regarding UKBA, its contractors' and police behaviour - http://tinyurl.com/c325ltz
When British people arrive in my country, they are regarded with courtesy and respect no matter what. A white, British senior manager who worked in Sri lanka for several years, at 40 times the salary of his local counterpart, said to me that where ever he went, he was treated with respect. He also added that he had no doubt many were extremely jealous of his salary and conditions - house and car supplied free - but he was made to feel he was there to do something useful.
My feeling is this should change. Anyone from Britain visiting Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Singapore who is not brown, black or yellow should be questioned at length - at least 2-3 hours - by immigration or border forces. That's what you do to us in the UK. The same should apply to you. We're not your colonies any more.”

“Never mind law enforcement etc etc, what about the commenters on this very forum who immediately went "good" as soon as they heard someone of foreign ancestry had their wedding ruined?
Could those involved (you know who you are) please all form an orderly queue to make a public apology?”
