A grandfather and grandson from the city are rowing 170 miles for charity this summer.

Earlier this month 15-year-old Jack Book and his grandad Malcolm Sully, 67, both from Odd Down, set off along the River Avon in an old rowing boat, called Grace, to raise money for charity.

After starting at Shirehampton Sailing Club near Bristol, on Sunday, August 12 the pair aim to row 170 miles to Leigh-on-Sea near Southend in Essex and raise £500 for this year's Children In Need campaign.

Mr Sully, who is retired, grew up in Bristol and in the early 1960s cycled to Leigh-on-Sea to visit relatives. Half a century later he decided to do a similar challenge but this time with his grandson.

On Sunday the pair reached the Thames and hope to finish the journey by the time Jack has to start back at Beechen Cliff School next week.

Mr Sully said they had got a bit wet during the first two weeks but had been overwhelmed by people's help and generosity along the way.

He said: "It's a world apart on the river. There's a whole community of people willing to help you out – it has restored my faith in human nature."

He added: "Our worst night was the first when we were very stiff and a bit sore but we've got more comfortable cushions now and as we've gone along we've got fitter. My belt has gone in from the last to the first notch."
