One Bath hotel has banned raucous hen parties and says it prefers to cater for a 'classier' pre-wedding party.

The Halcyon hotel, in South Parade, regularly plays hosts to hen parties, with cocktail-making masterclasses and gin tasting parties in its downstairs Circo bar.

But groups are questioned before any booking is taken to make sure they won't be too rowdy.

General manager Simon Dehany said: "When we first started we probably only did one cocktail-making masterclass on a Saturday every couple of weekends but since the summer we have done two or three every weekend.

"We work with a couple of companies that arrange hen parties and we feel that we are for a better class of hen.

"We have put a bit of a ban in place and will explain that this is our policy when we talk to people on the phone.

"It is difficult because we don't want to offend anyone but we don't see the merit of anyone walking around with an inflatable penis.

"There is a time and a place for that – Bath is a really beautiful place with a strong reputation for culture and I don't think it needs anything that goes against that."
