Bath couple evicted from Golden Bowl takeaway after 28 years . . . on wedding anniversary
A couple who have run a Chinese takeaway in Weston for more than a quarter of a century have thanked people for their support after being forced to close.
Alan Liu and his wife Jenny have run the Golden Bowl, in the High Street, for 28 years, and during that time have become a key part of village life.

The couple, who live in Purlewent Drive and have three grown-up children, were handed an eviction notice last month, as landlords pave the way for a Tesco extension.
They say that since the notice they have been inundated with letters and cards of support, flowers and kind messages from people sad to see them go.

Mr Liu, 62, said: "People have been so kind and supportive, and we would like to thank them all.
"They have been stopping us in the street saying how sorry they are to see us go.
"We have enjoyed running the takeaway and have built up a good relationship with the community. We are quite well known here now."
Mrs Liu, 58, added: "People who came into our takeaway were not customers, they were friends. We have watched children grow up, have their own children and bring them in.
"I am very sad to go and will miss it terribly."
The couple handed over the keys to the property on their 35th wedding anniversary, and said it had marred what should have been a happy day for them.
Mrs Liu said: "I was looking forward to our wedding anniversary, but it was a sad day as it was the day we handed the keys back, and had to leave."
Although Mr Liu will now take early retirement, his wife is having to look for a new job as they cannot afford for her to give up work completely.
Developer Bath Weston One has submitted an application to Bath and North East Somerset Council to double the size of the existing Tesco Express store, build six new two-bedroom flats and reduce the number of parking spaces.
It is due to be considered by the council's development control committee later this month.

“I guess we are lucky with where we live (Oldfield Pk) and work (town) and that one of us has the luxury of time.”

“If that's true, I applaud you. Fair play. Does it not become a pain in the rear sometimes or do you have to compromise some things? There's no particular reason why you should but it just occurred to me it mustn't be the easiest.”

“@Joning: Yes. Do you find that hard to believe? I wouldn't say it's necessarily 'noble', but it is a direct result of thinking about the wider implications of how I shop.”

“@ PhilRogers
Very noble. Presumably you boycott every large supermarket chain then?”

“Why on earth are they REDUCING the number of parking spaces? It's almost impossible to park there as it is!”

“A microcosmic example of what the large supermarkets have done / are doing to this country, aided and abetted by swathes of unthinking consumers.”
