Bath coffee-maker tastes success at UK Barista Championships

A coffee-maker from Bath has been crowned UK Barista Champion and will now represent the UK at a world championship event.

The skills of Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood, who co-owns Colonna and Small’s in Chapel Row, also win him the Best Cappuccino title at  UK Barista Championship at the London Coffee Festival.

Each of the 20 contestants in the semi-finals of the championship had to prepare and serve four espressos, four cappuccinos and four non-alcoholic espresso-based signature drinks. Six of them then ran through the routine all over again for the final.

Mr Colonna-Dashwood said: “Everything we do at our coffee shop aims to enthuse our customers about coffee. I’m now in a very privileged position and hope to continue to enthuse and engage with people and make great coffee, which I love to do.”

His signature drinks were made with a Rwandan coffee, and ruby grapefruit with sparkling water, resulting in reduced acidity and bringing out caramel and hops flavours. This was mixed with a root liquorice and star anise to add more tart, sharp, fruity content.

Mr Colonna-Dashwood will now represent the country at the World Barista Championships in Vienna from June 12 to 15.
