Groups of young women tottering around the streets, often wearing fancy dress or accessorised with L plates, have become a common sight on the streets of Bath on a Friday or Saturday night.

The city is now one of the UK's top hen party destinations, overtaking traditional favourites such as Brighton or Blackpool in recent polls.

But while it brings in much-needed money for the local economy, benefiting hotels, bars and restaurants, the high-spirited fun can occasionally cause a nuisance for residents.

GoHen is a Bradford on Avon- based company which organises such trips and has seen an increase in the number of women looking to Bath for their pre-wedding fun.

Managing director Simon Denning said the city had a unique offering of elegance, spa treatments, shopping and a buzzing nightlife which made it more and more popular with hen parties.

He said: "The GoHen team has seen a steep rise in parties keen to celebrate their hen night in this fabulous city. With an eclectic mix of Roman history, luxury spas, stunning Georgian architecture and chic nightlife, it's easy to see why Bath has rapidly become one of the leading UK destinations for girls of all ages seeking unforgettable hen party packages."

He added: "Aside from a relaxed atmosphere, Bath's reputation for top-level shopping is a big draw for the girls, as is the panoramic natural thermal spa.

"Great bars, sophisticated nightlife including excellent restaurants, clubs, comedy and theatre all jostle alongside a host of exciting outdoor adventure activities and superb accommodation.

"For girls looking for the best destination and packages, Bath really does have it all."

The popularity of Bath as the place to go for a woman's last weekend of freedom has meant that many local businesses have adapted to suit this particular market.

Self-catered accommodation firms offer packages which include spa treatments or afternoon tea, while bars and clubs are putting on cocktail making and tasting classes.

“As a casual observer of such things, I'd say that as far as hen-do's go, Bath very much attracts a 'mixed-bag'. In more ways than one!”

“If this is what Bath is becoming then I don't think it is anything to crow about. If this is the kind of business we want to attract then it is time for us to give up our World Heritage status and just become another tacky town with squawking girls and squawking seagulls - throw in a casino and a nice metal tower and there will be no need to go to Blackpool. Of course they will have to spend some money on a few more lights.

This article has hit an all-time low in depressing twaddle.”
