On Monday, February 11, at about 5.30pm the batter ies failed while it was in the middle of the pond, and after numerous attempts to retrieve it the family decided to leave it and come back the next day when it was light. When they returned the next day it was gone, leaving William, a pupil at Widcombe Junior School, devastated.

Mum Lisa said: "William is devastated and can't believe that someone would steal his boat.

"I hope that whoever has taken it will return it to him when they see how much it means to him."

“Perhaps the rules of salvage apply. The recoverer of the craft is entitled to reward/compensation in lieu of which he is entitled to keep the vessel.”

“Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Let it be known that thee Pond Pirates 'steal' the abandoned HMS Kendall! All local taverns and sweet shops will be checked for any clues leading to this dastardly deed! An award of three pieces of choco'late' for the finder!”

“"Finding an abandoned toy in a pond can hardly be called stealing, can it? "

Yes it can, it is called Theft by Finding and in your link 3(1) refers.”

Finding an abandoned toy in a pond can hardly be called stealing, can it? It's a pretty ludicrous claim that it is.”

“Isn't there a crime of theft by taking something that you know is not yours, and with the intention of keeping it?

We can only hope that whoever found it has handed it in, or intends to hand it in. It's of very little use to anyone without the remote control.”

“It's a bit sad, but surely there's no theft involved, is there..? Boy loses a boat. Someone finds a boat. (Technically that's recycling.)

An appeal to ask for it back might work, but labelling them a thief probably isn't going to help..

If it happens again try chucking some stones in and using the ripples to bring in it, or ring a mate with a torch and a fishing rod.

    Hope someone hands it in..”
