A group of Bath rugby players have gone back to college to get training in how to be more handy around the house.

They have signed up for a specially-created ten-week property maintenance course at the City of Bath College, which covers basics such as plumbing, woodwork, tiling and bricklaying.

The idea is that they will be able to take on DIY tasks themselves rather than having to call in the professionals.

The seven first-team players on the course are Ross Batty, Dave Attwood, Guy Mercer, Simon Taylor, Nick Koster, Mat Gilbert and Sam Vesty.

Attwood, who is renovating his house, said: "If something needed to be done, I would call my dad first and if dad couldn't fix it, I'd pay for a professional. Now I'm getting the practical knowledge of how to do things myself."

Attwood said he was getting a bit of stick from his friends about going back to school, but added: "They do think it's amusing, but they won't be laughing at us for long. I have already had some phone calls asking for help with jobs around their homes."

Daisy Walsh, head of engineering, construction and computing at the college, said: "The tutors and players have had significant input so we have been able to create a course of interest and most importantly of practical use."
