A 22-year-old man needed hospital treatment after being bitten by a dog in Bath.

The victim had been playing golf with two friends at the Approach Golf Course in Weston Road when the incident happened.

He was looking for his ball near the seventh hole when a Staffie-type dog, which was not on a lead, ran up to him and bit him on the calf.

The dog's owner was with another man and a collie-cross type dog, with the pair sitting nearby drinking cans of strong lager.

Once the victim and the dog owners had finally managed to get the dog under control, he called 999 and asked for an ambulance.

While he was on his mobile the men and their dogs walked off without leaving any details in the incident at around 3.30pm last Thursday.

Both men are described as looking "unkempt".

The owner of the Staffie-type dog was white, around 5ft 10ins tall, of slim build and aged about 40. He was wearing a camel-coloured baseball cap and anorak. He had facial stubble and a gold earring.

The dog was dark brown with lighter brown speckles. It had a black nylon or canvas-type harness around its neck and upper body.

The second man was also white, 5ft 10ins tall and about 40 years old. His dog was a black and white collie-cross.

Anyone with information is asked to call Bath police on 101.

“Unfortunately this is the risk that residents and tourists run with with the increase on the streets of Bath in the number of vagrants and feral dogs. An increase in this number is planned with the Bath Abbey development of a Genesis Shelter in the vaults. Will the Abbey Churchyard and Kingston Parade be over run by this threat to residents and tourists. Apologies for being so "Un-Christian".”
