This month marks the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Somerset & Dorset Railway through the amalgamation of the Dorset Central and Somerset Central railways in 1862.

Aubrey Punter, who was a fireman on the last northbound Pines Express, on the loco Evening Star, said they had arrived at Bath's Green Park station "with worst lot of coal we ever had".

The last Pines carried Joy and Graham Jewiss, who had been married in Bath on September 8, 1962, and were travelling to Bournemouth to fly to the Channel Islands for their honeymoon. The Green Park stationmaster arranged for their fares to be paid. The couple now live in Minehead.

The Pines Express originated in 1910 as a Manchester-Bournemouth restaurant car express which was given its name in 1927 apparently because of the number of pine trees in the resort area.

“You will be delighted to hear that the Somerset & Dorset railway did not die - it is springing to life again in Midsomer Norton (Somerset) and in Shillingstone (Dorset). At Midsomer Norton great strides are taking place in rebuilding the atmosphere, style and unique character of the line - with new gardens, two museums, a restoration centre and trains running. The website will tell you much more (http://tinyurl.com/cvbbua5). Nearly 1000 members support this project, many of whom are volunteers. Station staff in the olden days used to grow roses around the signal box and sell them in aid of Bath Hospital. The signal box has been rebuilt and who knows what might happen to the roses growing there now. The site has a unique astronomical garden too. So, pop along on a Sunday and catch a train down the line - recreating the journey (in part) of Mr & Mrs Jewiss (although we can't offer free tickets this time!).
