Health workers are spreading the word that strokes can be beaten.

The condition claims a life every six seconds and staff at the Royal United Hospital are working with the Stroke Association, ahead of World Stroke Day on Monday to increase awareness of the actions that can be taken to combat such attacks.

Every Monday they host a drop-in session in the Acute Stroke Unit allowing patients and relatives to ask questions and pick up information.

Consultant nurse Claire Fullbrook-Scanlon said: "Stroke is largely preventable and treatable. By sharing essential life-saving information and knowledge about actions and lifestyle behaviours we can decrease the risks of having a stroke.
