Ace Gabb nets top tennis title
Richard Gabb has followed in the footsteps of Andy Murray by winning the prestigious AEGON British Junior National Championships.
The TeamBath Tennis Academy ace capped a superb week by winning the 18-and-under title with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sidcup's Lewis Burton at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.
The 18-year-old had already won the doubles event with former TeamBath player Ashley Hewitt the previous day, beating top seeds Lewis Burton and George Morgan 6-2, 6-4 in the final.
Gabb, the fifth seed, said: "I got off to a really good start and carried it on. There was a little rain delay in the final but I just kept it going really.
"I didn't expect to win so easily to be honest. Lewis had been playing well and winning reasonably comfortably all week so I was expecting it to be tougher.
"I knew I could do well if I pulled my game together but I didn't really think I could win it. My previous best was the quarters at the Junior Nationals, so it's a good feeling to have won it this time – especially after the doubles win too.
"I've got a Futures tournaments coming up soon, so hopefully I can keep it going in the men's and see how it goes."
Gabb had earlier dispatched number four seed Tom Allen 7-5, 6-2 in the quarter-finals before seeing off doubles partner Hewitt 6-2, 6-2 in the semis.
The AEGON British Junior National Championship is the highest domestic accolade available to the UK's most promising juniors and has been running for more than 100 years.
More than 400 of the best boys and girls in the country competed across qualifying and main draws at the tournament, whose past winners include current British number ones Murray and Elena Baltacha.
