Potholes are reaching crisis point, highway bosses warned today, adding that more cuts to maintenance budgets would be “catastrophic”.

As roads across the West still lay under water this morning, and many questioned the efficacy of drainage, the Local Government Association said decades of underfunding, recent severe winters and widespread flooding earlier this year, “compounded by the current Government cutting £500 million from roads maintenance budgets, means many councils are struggling to move beyond simply patching up a deteriorating network”.

It added that, should councils be stripped of even more funding in the Autumn Statement, many will find it nearly impossible to keep on top of road repairs.

The LGA said it would become critical should there be another harsh winter similar to the last, which caused £600 million of road damage.

“I think the theory is that the film crews and festivals are supposed to bring in visitors (directly or indirectly) and with them income. All those people you may have seen wandering around in Jane Austen-era costume recently would have spent some money while they were here. I'm not sure how much the council does spend promoting festivals - it certainly doesn't spend much on banners and other indications that a festival is taking place.”

“It's the same every year, it is the fault of central government. Yet within Bath priority is given to film crews, festivals, management consultants and presentation at the expense of basic needs such as homeless shelters, potholes, defective pavements, toilets and even pest control (watch the onslaught of the rats after the floods). And when will the council recognise that there is only one answer to the central congestion, and more signs and diversions are not it.”
