The Creative Writing Day saw the work of 250 children judged.

Pieces included poetry and prose, with a range of genres including haiku, sonnet, monologue, and the short story.

The audience was treated to a reading of The Rain, the winning poem in the under- eights category by Matilda Hill.

Author Anna Wilson was the adjudicator, and shared her tips with budding writers, telling them to read their work aloud to avoid any clumsy phrasing and awkward rhythms.

Miss Wilson's book The Poodle Problem was featured last year by the Richard and Judy Book Club.

Co-secretary of the festival's creative writing section Jane Riekemann said: "Anna Wilson's adjudication was insightful and always positive.

"She brought her experience as a children's book editor to show writers how best to improve their work.

"Creative Writing Day, though not a workshop, provides a valuable opportunity for writers of all ages to learn more about the craft and hone their skills."
